This intriguing record offers a cross-section of the music played by the 20-piece (or so) collective that has emerged after Mark Kavuma founded the original Banger Factory Quintet in 2015. It’s multi-generational, not just in terms of players, but in terms of repertoire, so pianist Noah Stoneman’s dazzling solo on ‘Wayward’s Return’ not only sets the scene for Theo Erskine’s energetic alto, and Kavuma’s own authoritative trumpet, but sits adjacent to a simply ravishing account of the old standard Rube Bloom/Johnny Mercer song, ‘Fools Rush In’, with the assured tenor of Ruben Fox and the rhapsodic piano of Reuben James, before Misha Fox’s reflective vocal.
On the vocal front, Marcina Arnold shines on ‘Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda’ with not only the organ and guitar of Artie and Jake Zaitz, but a neatly scored chart for the horns too. Slow tempi hold no fears, the band holding firm over Cleasby’s drums for Artie Zaitz’s vocal on an extremely leisurely paced ‘Evenin’’.
Another fine moment is the appearance of Deschanel Gordon, whose piano grooves and then flies over the walking bass of Garside and the drums of Thomas, on a track titled ‘Back!’
But ‘back’ is not really what this collection of musicians – nor its repertoire – are about. For sure, the tradition is always present, but Kavuma and his colleagues are creatively looking at collective ways forward.
He, and they, all deserve our praise and attention for that.
