Starting out as a tribute to the great Shirley Horn, this four-track 12” vinyl EP suddenly became a double tribute when Murphy’s pianist, George Mesterhazy, passed away suddenly just days after his 59th birthday. Mesterhazy was a protégé of Horn’s and it was he who originally suggested to Murphy the idea for the tribute. The singer gives it his all, his remarkable falsetto heard to moving effect in ‘Here’s To Life’ and some typically trenchant scatting on the title track. The date is made all the more special with the presence of Steve Williams, Horn’s drummer for 25 years. Bassist Curtis Lundy, pianist Alex Minasian and trumpeter Till Brönner complete the quintet. Brönner guests on just two songs, including an affecting solo on ‘But Beautiful’ and some fine muted trumpet on ‘Get Out Of Town’. The pleasingly heavy 180gram vinyl sounds fantastic, with lots of space around the vocal. In case further persuasion is needed, there’s a bonus download code too.
