Recorded at Studio RTV Maribor in Slovenia and released on the Montreux Jazz Label, TCB, this previously unreleased gem from vocalist Mark Murphy presents six originals, the standard ‘If I Should Lose You’, plus ‘Lilac Wine’. Murphy, who had turned 64 three months prior to the recording, is in exceptionally fine voice. Writing in the CD booklet, the ‘deep feeling’ that Murphy's fellow vocalist and great friend Sheila Jordan recalls on hearing him for the first time in Greenwich Village is everywhere in evidence, from his freewheeling scat to the pliability of his phrasing and the sheer beauty of his timbre. The wide-ranging originals run the gamut from the classical pose of the title track to the complete abstraction of ‘Hodnik’, the latter featuring some spectacular interjections from Miklin. ‘Empty Room’, a Pauer instrumental to which Murphy adds new lyrics, and the Murphy/Miklin penned ‘Next Page’, featuring a towering bass solo from Oberleitner, are both standouts.
