Soskin last appeared on Steeplechase with his acoustic trio album Hearts And Minds (see Jazzwise 224), which was quietly impressive. A difference this time is the replacement of drummer Anthony Pinciotti by the excellent Nussbaum, who works well with the returning Anderson and is alternately discreet and stimulating behind Soskin. The pianist is clearly not one of those who greets every chord with gales of runs and arpeggios, but is much more intent on creating propulsive lines that decorate the sequence and make melodic sense. It's heartening to those of an earlier generation (he himself has just turned 65) that he's even prepared to leave in the odd miss-hit note to preserve his overall logic, and his choice of repertoire is refreshingly broad. From a 1950s song standard to infrequently covered tunes by Monk, Powell, Clare Fischer and Earl Zindars, Soskin also adds items seldom visited by pianists at all, such as Shorter's ‘Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum’ and Tony Williams's ‘Pee Wee’. So, if you fancy some serious unfussy postbop piano, lend an ear.
