Over the past decade Mats Eilertsen has enhanced his reputation as a musician-composer in the best traditions of contemporary Nordic-jazz acoustic bass with an impressive portfolio as leader. He's forged a close relationship with the ECM label while simultaneously developing his own distinctive brand of atmospheric Euro-jazz with a steady stream of releases on the reliably unpredictable, yet superb, Norwegian imprint Hubro. Reveries And Revelations is a more ambient-music focused venture than previously, with its slow-mo, drifting, looping, soundscape informed by Indian classical and Nordic folk music on the melody side of things, with nods to classical/electronic forms of minimalism, abstract improv and Bill Frisell's pastoralism. But Eilertsen has tried something different by abandoning typical jazz recording methods. The select line-up of Eilertsen's compatriots stated above didn't actually play together; contributions were recorded separately building on the foundation of the bassist's broad approaches to arco and pizzicato playing. He then “arranged and assembled” the finished compositions into a final edit. The result is inevitably more considered than usual, though lacking something of the collective energy and genuine warmth of previous collaborations.
