A welcome reissue of an item in the catalogue of the iconic Strata label that's rarer than hen's fillings, let alone teeth.
Saxophonist Maulawi is an obscure figure in jazz history, but this 1974 album has stood the test of time and ranks as a worthwhile document of an era in which recording could be appealingly lo-fi. Indeed, there is an almost naked quality to the mix (or lack thereof) which at times has a drily muffled, slightly grainy quality, which is further emphasised by the presence of a choppy guitar rather than softer keyboard. Yet it works. African kalimba that scrapes and ripples, bass that floats and swings, and the leader's horn that sighs and soars, all make for an engaging blend on originals and soul and jazz standards. ‘People Make The World Go Round’ is as intensely moody as the sublime melody requires, while ‘Maiden Voyage’ and ‘I Say A Little Prayer For You’ are very tastefully done.
