Coming to you all the way from funky Austria is this unpretentious doubledisc souvenir of the golden age of British jazz-funk circa 1979. Some of the hippest studio sessionistas in town lay down their markers here with brass, strings, beevees and miscellaneous percussion galore. Middleton was the arranger and multi-keyboard synth-man for every occasion, with Ahwei his tuneful lead guitarist, but the Morrissey-Mullen band is more interesting, for the good reason that it toured live and contained two of Britain's finest soloists of any era. Tenorist Dick Morrissey was one of the first UK jazz stars to bring full commitment to funky music by the likes of Eddie Harris, Bill Withers, Donny Hathaway and Earth Wind and Fire.

He realised that straightahead four-four time was no longer the only way to swing and he was right. Beside him Glaswegian guitar wizard Mullen was doing the business with a humble Fender Telecaster and a few wah-wah and chorus pedals. Numbers like ‘Lovely Day’, ‘Return to Tooting Broadway’ and ‘Soul Eyes’ would tear it up at rammed Thames-side pubs like the Half Moon in Putney and could still fill dance floors today. Don't doubt it.
