On this duo recording, the versatile bassist-composer Barry Guy, and the Baroque violinist Maya Homburger lay down their unique interpretations of art music across the centuries. Tales of Enchantment flows in and out of contemporary classical music via György Kurtág and the famous Mystery Sonatas of 17th century composer H.I.F. Biber, as well as the early music of ninth century hymns (both of which call on the specialities of Homburger's baroque violin) as well as extracting inspiration from diverse visual artists such as Max Bill and Elana Gutmann. There is a sense of abandon embedded in these interpretations that's a result of a disciplined yet flexible adherence to notation that involves the duo's improvised responses to it. Aside from a largely abstract-classical chamber strings set up on Guy's central seven-part suite dedicated to Max Bill, the founder of the concrete art and design movement, Guy's jazz influence emerges briefly in a more groove-orientated bass solo on the track ‘Going Home’. From the point of view of listening, as opposed to analysis, the immense time frame of the recorded material doesn't undermine the unity of the album. It's the sound of exquisite chamber music making.
