A two-for-one of Tyner's debut releases as leader. Not surprisingly, Inception is rich with Coltrane-esque echoes as this is the classic quartet minus The Great Man. So you get a clearer focus on elements of Tyner's style (he was still only 23 when Inception was cut), like his crystal clear articulation, that preternatural brightness of tone and that rhythmic surety. Yet, despite the four originals, there's little here to suggest Tyner is yet out of Coltrane's thrall. Coltrane's spirit is redolent throughout.
Reaching Fourth is different again; Haynes and Grimes are their own men and Tyner sounds almost shockingly conservative compared to the work he was doing with Coltrane. There's only two originals, and one, ‘Blues Back’, is a classic blues which reveals Tyner, as he puts it, going back to the source, not reaching for the new like his boss. Indeed the album comes to life as the tempos drop, climaxing as it does with two standards, ‘Old Devil Moon’ and a deliriously swinging ‘Have You Met Miss Jones’ which belie the image of Tyner as one of the 1960s great innovators. We're still a giant step from The Real McCoy.
