MEB (Miles Electric Band) holds out the promise of Miles Davis reimagined for a new generation, or, as the publicity notes put it, “That You Not Dare To Forget mixes the spirit of neighbourhood block parties with the mystical elixir fuelling Bitches Brew to disrupt the worlds of hip-hop and jazz with a new full-on musical adventure starring a who's who of legends inventing new social music for the 21st century.”
To test this proposition, let us take one of the five tracks, ‘Bitches are Back,’ apparently built around a Miles Davis solo (which we don't get to hear) with anonymous drop-ins from various members of the (admittedly distinguished) assembled cast, together with samples of ‘Bridging the Gap’ by Nas, a sample of Davis speaking, and new rap by Blu.
It's somewhat strained contemporary body music, aimed at trendy Gen Z-ers, who, drink in hand, trawl after-dark parties; and also clubs and raver-filled warehouses with 110dB sound systems – where, on the evidence of the files supplied, it would pack a powerful punch.
