Although made by a trio of Norwegians, there’s an undeniable Scottish influence on this album. Guitarist Haftor Medbøe has lived in Edinburgh for many years, the three musicians first worked together at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival in 2013, and the album was recorded in a nearby village. In fact, The Space Between could feasibly refer to the North Sea, as moods and melodies evocative of either side sweep across these compositions like lighthouse beams piercing thick maritime mists. Gunnar Halle’s trumpet generates atmospheric effects, shushing like distant weather, while Medbøe’s guitar picks out poised melodies with clean, economical precision. Even when the guitar generates a little more heat through subtle distortion, or when the trumpet buzzes with metallic echo, it remains an extremely pretty and polite date, largely due to Espen Eriksen’s somewhat overly sincere piano, pouring its heart into lonely laments like a moody Romantic stranded on a cold, brooding shoreline.
