Michael Feinberg's Elvin Jones project is more of a celebration of the bass players that played with Elvin Jones than a homage to the drummer's polyrhythmic thunder itself. Five bassists get name-checked, and each one's relationship with Jones gets marked by a cover of a tune they recorded with him. Jimmy Garrison, Feinberg's primary influence, gets ‘Miles’ Mode' and ‘Nancy with the Laughing Face’, and George Mraz ‘Earth Jones’ and ‘Three Card Molly’. Gene Perla, Richard Davis and Dave Holland complete the roster – Dave's relationship is a bit of a stretch here, with ‘It Is Written’ from the Bill Frisell with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones trio album on Nonesuch – and the Jones connection is really a convenient peg to hang some nice tunes on. Feinberg is certainly a good bass player with a round sound, firm fretwork and strong walking line. And Billy Hart leans into the pulse and swaggers with the best of them. But this set is nothing if not varied, and roams into the swishy, less energetic territory that Hart has favoured recently. The two openers are the best and highly recommended. ‘Earth Tones’ is a long, atmospheric pedal with the saxophonist Garzone wistful and airy, and ‘Miles’ Mode' has Feinberg walking with conviction and sax adding tension with a hard focussed sound.
