Wunderkammer XXL is a Collector’s Edition two-CD set that reissues Wollny’s 2009 Wunderkammer, a duet collaboration with Tamar Halperin, together with a new release of their live performance with the 15-piece hr-Bigband, conducted by Jim McNeely, recorded at the Deutsches Jazzfestival Frankfurt in October last year. While the original Wunderkammer from 2009 might be described as a series of watercolour vignettes, Wunderkammer XXL (XXL = extra large?) comes boldly realised in striking oil colours and reprises five of the original 12 pieces from Wunderkammer – ‘Kabinett II, IV, V and VI’ plus ‘Sagée’ – plus ‘Monsters: Symmetriads’ from [em] 3, and ‘Hexentanz I – III’ and ‘Hexentanz IV – V’ from Wollny’s Piano Works VII (the piece also appeared in part form on Joachim Kühn & Michael Wollny and Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic I). What is remarkable is how Jörg-Achim Keller’s arrangements get to the heart of Wollny’s music, illuminating interior detail and capturing the essence of the music in vivid orchestral technicolor. It comes as no surprise to learn the concert provoked a 20-minute ovation – the wonder is that it wasn’t more.
