If this album, from the archives of the German radio station SWR (or Südwestrundfunk), serving the southwest of Germany, is not the best representation of Michel Petrucciani on record, then it has to be pretty close. The sound quality and balance of this concert is, as might be expected by the high standards of German radio, excellent, and this double LP on 180g vinyl is worth every penny. The repertoire is well balanced, a mixture of Petrucciani originals – he's a good songwriter, not afraid to build-in Monk-like edges and corners – and familiar standards that Petrucciani makes his own, reconfiguring them with ingenuity and wit.

Peacock and Haynes, with whom the pianist shares the billing, had impressive curriculum vitae that between them included work with the very best pianists in jazz: from Keith Jarrett to Bill Evans, from Paul Bley to Bud Powell, they had been there, done it and had a cupboard full of tee-shirts to prove it.

With Petrucciani they are not there to make up the numbers, playing with a degree of engagement that in turn lifts the pianist, whose dazzling runs and unpredictability, melodic ingenuity and dissonant twists keeps his accompanists on their toes in turn.

Although high praise was showered on Petrucciani during his lifetime, his reputation has somewhat receded since his death in 1999. This album gives proof, if any proof were needed, that history has bypassed the Frenchman with undue haste.
