Despite having the least name recognition of this trio of performers, LeDonne is a veteran of the so-called modern mainstream, an ultra-reliable player with many notable sideman credits Now in his early sixties, his avowed heroes are two 1930s-born pianists in Cedar Walton and McCoy Tyner, covering one of the former's tunes (‘N.P.S’) and dedicating one of his own to the latter (‘Saud’). He even has some of the groove associated with another scion of the 1930s, Wynton Kelly – high praise indeed – and sees the virtue in a funky Ray Brown tune (‘Lined With A Groove’) that has McBride playing lead. Clearly emphasising feeling rather than facility, LeDonne nevertheless has huge reserves of right-hand technique, and his closing original (‘Bopsolete’) underlines its ironic title at the rate of 320 bpm. You would expect superior backing from Christian and Lewis but you might be surprised that, nearly five minutes into the opening track, Nash adds 32 bars of Clark Terry-like scatting.
