Just for the record, 2010 was the 40th Anniversary year of Bitches Brew, you haven't woken up in a time warp. The original 40th anniversary Bitches Brew two CD and DVD set was reviewed in these pages back in 2010. Since then we've had Bitches Brew 40th Anniversary Collectors Edition box, including an additional CD Tanglewood Live 1970 plus the double vinyl LP with booklet and reproduction memorabilia; and Bitches Brew Live released in 2011, that covers the three titles Davis played at the 1969 Newport Jazz Festival and Davis' complete Isle of Wight 1970 concert. Earlier, we had The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions in 1998, part of the incredible Miles ‘metal spine’ box set series. This latest Bitches Brew 40th Anniversary Collectors Edition is a reissue of the box set above (now deleted) but minus the double vinyl LP and the memorabilia. It includes the original annotations by journalist Greg Tate with photos and additional notes by Ashley Khan, Lenny White and Serafine Klarwein. CDs 1 and 2 and the 1969 Copenhagen concert DVD are identical but the big plus is the inclusion of the complete August 1970 Tanglewood concert, only available with the high-priced vinyl box. This is the band that included Keith Jarrett with Gary Bartz replacing Wayne Shorter. The concert includes four titles from Bitches Brew, revealing how these pieces seemed to be in a state of permanent evolution every time they were played. Here the approach is funkier, more groove orientated than anything that had gone before, and is a valuable addition to the Davis discography of this period.
