Davis studiously avoided revisiting his distinguished past until the final year of his life. But on 8 July, 1991, amid much brouhaha, he appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival to revisit the Gil Evans arrangements of Miles Ahead with the massed bands of the Gil Evans Orchestra and the George Gruntz Concert Band conducted by Quincy Jones – later released as Miles & Quincy Live at Montreux. He then flew to Paris to appear at the Grande Hall, La Villette on 10 July for a concert advertised simply as ‘Miles and Friends’. Twelve tunes were played that night, opening with three from Davis’ regular working band – ‘Perfect Way’, ‘Star People’ and ‘Human Nature’, the latter a crowd pleaser from You’re Under Arrest that had developed into a feature for Kenny Garrett. Later, on the second CD, the band performs ‘Wrinkle’ (with Daryl Jones on bass) and Prince’s ‘Penetration’. The remainder of tracks are a series of mix n’ match groupings fronted by Davis and drawn from the distinguished cast of guests; highlights include ‘All Blues’, ’In a Silent Way’ with Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, Corea, Holland and Foster; ’Katia’ with the two Johns, McLaughlin and Scofield, and Jackson, Darryl Jones and Wellman, while ‘Footprints’ has Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Al Foster. What a concert to witness, no doubt prompting thoughts of “I hope it’s been recorded” among the audience. It was, by Warners. But this isn’t that recording, it’s a bootleg recorded by an audience member that first appeared as Black Devil in the mid 1990s.
