This performance, by what has come to be known as Davis' ‘Lost Quintet’, was taken from his Autumn 1969 tour of Europe and recorded in Milan on 26 October. It sits comfortably alongside the 2012 Sony release Miles Davis Quintet: Live in Europe 1969 The Bootleg Series The Sony set, three CDs and one DVD, document Davis' 25 and 26 July 1969 appearances at Antibes, his 5 November appearance in Stockholm and his 7 November appearance at the Berliner Jazztage (this on DVD). Dubbed the ‘Lost Quintet’ because it was never recorded as a quintet per se by Columbia, these recordings collectively fill a large void in Davis' discography The four tracks on this Sleepy Night release -‘Directions’, ‘Bitches Brew’, ‘Sanctury’ and ‘Mastuero’ (sic), actually ‘Masqualero’, all appear as different performances on the Sony set in what is surely a partial extract from the Milan concert. It was not “the last concert ever by the band”, as claimed, since the Sony set has the 5 and 7 November versions This release reflects the rawness of this band, which would be brought into clearer focus on Bitches Brew..
