Although this was Coltrane's first appearance at Atlantic studios, it was not issued in the US until after his own albums Giant Steps, Coltrane Jazz and My Favorite Things. So, the participants or the producer found it less interesting but, like some other informal blowing sessions, it has much fine playing. Perhaps less innovative than either Jackson or Coltrane were years earlier as members of the Gillespie sextet, the co-leaders borrowed one member each from their current employers (Chambers from Miles, Kay from the MJQ). The saxophonist tends to take a rather backseat role, though he may have suggested the key for the title-track (one of only two blues I know in C-sharp minor), and correspondingly he sounds all the more startling when soloing. It's a pity that, being a facsimile of the original album, the reissue doesn't contain the three extra tracks, unissued till a further decade afterwards, that are included in The Heavyweight Champion box.
