Brazilian demigod Milton Nascimento has built a long and successful career on his singular voice, a falsetto as high and wide-ranging as an angel's. His musical oeuvre has been similarly arresting: think a blend of Brazilian bossa nova and folk, African rhythms and European jazz, pop, rock and classical music. While not as internationally fêted as, say, the likes of Gilberto Gil – Nascimento's predilection for overproduced “soft jazz” hasn't done him any favours – the man is undoubtedly a superstar. This 40-track double CD cherry picks from his vast back catalogue, here are singles that have become standards, recorded many times over. From his guest vocals on Wayne Shorter's 1974 lush hybrid album Native Dancer to his 1980s stint with Ariola Brasil and such stellar albums as Sentinela and Anima (the title track from which is here) to his turns with everyone from Herbie Hancock and Sarah Vaughan and Pat Metheny and, er, Duran Duran to his redoubtable songwriting talents, Nascimento's creative drive has never let up. An embarrassment of riches.
