Correct me if I'm wrong, but in a climate where everything from “Ghost” orchestras (Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Sun Ra etc) to legacy tribute acts (Miles, Coltrane, Billie Holiday, etc) abound, I can't recall four musicians currently touring the extensive repertoire left in limbo by the departed Modern Jazz Quartet. Could be that it's not a question of performing extracts from their ‘book’ or consulting a Savile Row tailor. just that there's nobody I can think of who could replicate the sound of Milt Jackson's bluesdrenched vibraphone with genuine conviction. And it's that unique “sound” that has always been the MJQ's major selling point. With their eye on ticket sales, the MJQ were not averse to regularly reworking past glories. This being a concert performance (originally conceived for Japanese release) it's to be expected that they included a couple of selections upon which they built such a powerful legacy: in this instance ‘Django’ and ‘Bags New Groove’. As to be expected the sound is sublime.
