Proving that it's not where you're from, but where you're at, this trio clearly fell in through their rhythmic drive, and empathetic re-framing of music. From Austria, France and America (with Chinese-Taiwanese heritage) they don't dwell on melody or beat, but stutter, twitch and retch fur balls of unidentifiable texture. Occasionally, vocalist Audrey Chen allows her glottal stops and creakings to morph into a human wail, just as König (previously in Kompost 3) might release a resounding drumroll, but it's rarely obvious what the sounds are. That's irrelevant, this is a noise conveyor belt for our imagination. The commanding electric guitar of Julien Desprez is played like a pilot in a cockpit: as if he's flicking switches, swivelling handles, signalling; it's so playful, and yet deadly serious. Bullet-fire and mighty blasts erupt suddenly, loose twangs fuzz and burn out, and on the opening ‘Fictitious Forces’ he gets dirty hardcore in a glorious rock-out. But it's for a split second, fleeting, in fact everything the band does is left behind as soon as it is arrived at. This comprehension of restraint is crucial, it steers the music away from indulgence. It would be good to hear a heavier side of Chen, the slurred, stretched vocals glimpsed in ‘Aquamarine’ could balance the might of Desprez' antics, but the raw aesthetic of these artists, and their assimilation, makes this a debut of note.
