This mini-album is an introduction to the 24-year-old pianist-producer Moses Yoofee and his Berlin-based electric-acoustic trio, who have been working together since their early teens on the German ‘live’ contemporary jazz scene.
They pick up on a specifically 21st century lineage from Robert Glasper through to the likes of Yussef Kamaal but with a spacey vibe with their own signature that could well be informed too, by the sonic worlds of Nordic Jazztronica and the Avishai Cohen Trio through to Radiohead’s post-rock explorations.
Yoofee’s acoustic piano can draw on Glasper’s mellow neo-soul sentiment while on synth there’s echoes of Joe Zawinul as well as Stevie Wonder all the way through to contemporary electronica. Drummer Noah Fürbringer’s immaculately crisp groove playing is derived from a blend of funk, hiphop and broken beat while Roman Klobe’s snakingly funky electric bass adds an underlying sub-sonic dimension.
There’s an improvised craft as well as controlled ambience here, the former being something that can often go missing in similar contemporary fusions of this kind. It’s a relevant combination that makes young Moses Yoofee a name to look out for in the future.
