Norwegian improvisers Moskus range widely on this album of whimsical sonic sketches (their fourth for Hubro), which sounds a bit like a jam session with the contents of a primary-school music box. There's a deliberate, and thoughtprovoking, naivety to the trio's approach. Anja Lauvdal explores nostalgic synth and keyboard sounds, twiddling organ, and jangly upright piano, which she prefers and describes as “more intimate and more ordinary” than a concert grand. Fredrik Luhr Deitrichson contributes dancing basslines and Hans Hulbækmo adds overblown recorder and numerous, rackety, broken percussion sounds – including vibraphone plinks and scrapes of musical saw. The folky ‘Irsk Setter’, one of several tunes written by Hulbækmo (most of the tracks are completely improvised) is a highlight, with its pipe and accordion sounds and playful use of handclaps. And ‘Haiku’ is another standout track, which takes the atmosphere of lo-fi naivety to its furthest extent by making use of a tinny, Casio keyboard drum loop.
