Although not as well known outside the UK's Polish community as he should be, Mozdzer enjoys phenomenal success in Poland, where he is feted a star in a way that jazz musicians quite simply are not in the UK – name any Brit jazz musician for whom tens of thousands turn out for his or her concerts like they did for his Mozdzer+ concert in 2010 while a concert in 2008 in the Gdañsk shipyard with Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour attracted an audience of 60,000. Mozdzer's fame is now spreading beyond his homeland, especially in Germany, and part of the reason is his genuine charisma as a performer, while his technical accomplishment as a pianist tends to remain masked in favour of melodic expressivity. Yes, he is capable of complexity, both melodically and contrapuntally, yet his is a vox humana that somehow speaks to all. These characteristics are captured perfectly on Polska where he brings a very personal definition to ‘the thoughtfully intense’, such as the opening ‘Chai Peimot’. Yet whether it be ballads like ‘Norgon’ or the impressive climax to the album, a version of Hendrix' ‘Are You Experienced?’ with the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Macin Nalecz Niesiotowski (such are the perks of being famous that you can whistle up an ensemble such as this), Mozdzer always succeeds in suggesting that there is more to his music than meets the ear.
