This is the third album from trombonist and educator Siegel, who has penned all the tunes. Her band are from Seattle, the stand-out contributor being Albero, who tinkles and chimes with panache over the opener ‘The Adventures of Violet and Pilot’ and the curiously-titled ‘Seep into my Pores’, while ’Sabotage’ is a helter-skelter ride along the byways of hard bop.
At track five we encounter the start of the mini-suite from which the album takes its title. Occasionally chaotic and discordant, no doubt reflecting the composer’s state of mind (as she explains in the liner notes), it features solo spots for Mines and Albero, ending on a brighter note as prominence is given to the trombone.
Siegel uses the wide instrumental range of her band to create variety, as everyone gets their chance to shine, but actually there’s rather too much going on: one would have preferred a narrrower focus on one particular style or set of styles, although I suspect the material would be more fun in a live setting.
