Cole's 1950 European tour had opened in the UK to mixed reviews. Commentators and audiences found his vocals too saccharine and the presence of Costanzo an irritation. There was also dissension in the band between Costanzo and Ashby and Comfort, with Cole himself preferring to travel and stay separately from the trio members. A year later, while Costanzo stayed on for a while, the others had left. By the time they reached Switzerland, Cole appears to have opted to feature the trio's jazz skills and opens on this concert recording with a short piece featuring Ashby before allowing the nimble-fingered Comfort to strut his stuff on the Costanzo-free ‘Tea For Two’, Cole's vital swing piano alongside. With only five vocals among the 15 tracks presented here, many of which replicate his Carnegie Hall programme of some 11 months earlier, the accent is clearly on the trio's instrumental prowess, albeit in a cleverly-packaged format, Ashby a player of genuine consequence as he shows on a lengthy version of ‘Body and Soul’ and the very spirited ‘Bop Kick’. Costanzo gets his chance in the spotlight too with ‘Go Bongo’ – a sentiment with which I wholeheartedly agree – and Cole does sing on the likes of ‘Sweet Lorraine’ inevitably, but it's the swing the trio generate on ‘How High The Moon’, with Cole's fast-moving piano highlighted, that seems to have pleased this Zurich audience the most. Rightly so.
