Metcalfe and Brice are regulars on the London improv scene, who have been playing together for a number of years. The duo's debut CD was recorded in St Mary's Old Church, in Stoke Newington, north London – which may partly explain the curiously restrained atmosphere of hush that hangs over the encounter. Flute and bass perform a tentative dance, warily skirting each other as if nervous of committing to an embrace. Brice investigates stringent arco harmonics and percussive thrumming, taking full advantage of the rich timbral possibilities of the double bass. By contrast, Metcalfe's flute has a much more limited potential for invention, leaving him occasionally sounding as if he's fluttering along behind, chasing Brice's ideas. At their best, these improvisations conjure images of some woodland fable, of bird and beast in mythic conversation. Yet there's a distant, oddly disconnected feel to the session that makes it difficult to engage with fully.
