Nick Sorensen and John Law have been performing together as a duo (and in larger groups) since 2006, and their easy, practised sparring and relaxed candour in one another's company shine through in this set, made up equally of originals and standards. The latter run the gamut from a cheerfully brisk, clear-as-a-bell ‘A Foggy Day’ to a bracingly vigorous arrangement of Lennon and McCartney's ‘Ticket to Ride’, which suggests Dave Brubeck reworking a Middle Eastern folk motif. Their brightly urbane version of ‘Straight No Chaser’ irons out many of Monk's angularities. The originals are marked by ear-catching themes; the Sorensen/Law co-written title track closes proceedings on a gently uplifting note. Sorensen is a fine, lyrical saxophonist; Law's classically infl ected talents are already well established, especially through his recordings with his Art of Sound trio. It's an entertaining collection, designed to reach out and grab your ears rather than wait for the listener to come and find its hidden splendours, which is no bad thing. Recorded at the Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford on Avon, it also benefits from a glowingly luminous and resonantly spacious sound.
