Whatever the case, the ageless enfant terrible of the violin here applies his not inconsiderable fiddling talents to a highly enjoyable set of mostly borrowed tunes – it’s a highly eclectic selection, running the gamut from Brubeck to Bach. Four of the 12 numbers are by Fats Waller, a genius of stride piano whose music Kennedy interprets in the manner of a master of hot jazz: hence we get ‘I’m Crazy ’Bout My Baby (And My Baby’s Crazy ’Bout Me)’ àla Stéphane Grappelli (Rolf Bussalb provides the Django Reinhardt stylings while the leader adds a little celeste). Perhaps most surprising of all is Bach’s ‘Sonata No. 2 for Solo Violin’, served up in convincingly reggaefied fashion.
