“All of this repertoire is music which I have either grown up with or feel as if I have grown up with, bearing in mind that growing up is something I haven’t been overly interested in so far.” I’m confused by Nige’s sleevenote, I have to say. If this is music he’s grown up with but he hasn’t actually grown up, does that mean he’s never actually heard any of it before? Whatever the case, the ageless enfant terrible of the violin here applies his not inconsiderable fiddling talents to a highly enjoyable set of mostly borrowed tunes – it’s a highly eclectic selection, running the gamut from Brubeck to Bach. Four of the 12 numbers are by Fats Waller, a genius of stride piano whose music Kennedy interprets in the manner of a master of hot jazz: hence we get ‘I’m Crazy ’Bout My Baby (And My Baby’s Crazy ’Bout Me)’ àla Stéphane Grappelli (Rolf Bussalb provides the Django Reinhardt stylings while the leader adds a little celeste). Perhaps most surprising of all is Bach’s ‘Sonata No. 2 for Solo Violin’, served up in convincingly reggaefied fashion.
