From the sparkling twinned attack of Price and Claret singing and swinging through Sam Jones’ ‘Bittersuite’, you know you’re in the presence of something more than a little special. Even when they take it down, as on Horace Silver's ‘Silver's Serenade’, the energy levels don't drop: the guitarists’ voices merge and complement beautifully, giving space to each other's fluid, single string runs. Indeed, as both have quite similar tonalities, they can sound like extensions of their own voices rather than in a duel or ‘cutting’ exercise. Yes, Price can dig bluesier; Claret, not surprisingly given his Gallic heritage, can pulse with a 'Hot Club' swing, but the joy of Entente Cordiale is the way they share and extend each other's lines, often finishing each other's phrases like the best of friends finishing each other's sentences over a convivial beer (or claret).
They can go dark, too: ‘Simone’ has a moody urgency, but it's the joyous doubling, as on Emily Remler's ‘Blues for Herb’ (the Ellis/Remler heritage runs rich through Entente Cordiale) that'll have you hitting repeat.
