The album title seems to say it all. This is what the Price organ trio is destined to do. No ifs or buts and by Jove, don’t they do it well! This is it, plain and simple. Well, not that simple perhaps, for what we have here is a record by a trio of top players, a true band of brothers, honed on the road and primed and ready to play.
Price explains the derivation or selection of each piece- there are nine – in an informative note, revealing his deep absorption in the art of which he is such a key exponent. Thus, the opening piece, ‘Hey, Shirley’ is his and it’s inspired by organist Shirley Scott’s easy-paced collaboration with Kenny Burrell. Stanley’s organ underpins a neat ¾ line, Barford laying down the beat robustly, each player alert to the task, Price supple as Stanley builds tension.
Lorne Lofsky’s ‘Morning Star’ is calmer, serene almost, Stanley horn-like in his solo, the groove bubbling below. ‘Night Flight’ in Price’s word is a ‘burner,’ the opening guitar passages virtuosic, as is the remainder of his exploration of this contrafact based on ‘Maiden Voyage’, ahead of Stanley’s searing, almost monumental organ burst, and Barford’s clamorous solo. ‘You Don’t Know Me’ for the late Joey DeFrancesco is funkier and hits it mark superbly, Stanley incandescent. It’s not all tear-ups either: they can be tight or loose as the material requires. Price says he sees playing jazz as ‘a constant pursuance to reach a point where we can deliver the message succinctly, soulfully and successfully.’ Job done, I’d say.
