As the New Thing continues to evolve around them, bringing in all manner of contemporary urban sounds within the UK jazz parameters, the Acid Jazz team remain faithful to the conventions of the genre to which they gave a name.

Nimbus Sextet are a young posse of Scottish musicians but the stylistic touchstones on this very accomplished record are firmly embedded in the sounds and styles of the late 1970s, with Herbie’s Columbia period a clear reference point. There are some sonic updates: Mischa Steven’s nimble basslines are delivered with a fat and rounded tone and an absence of slapping and popping, the title track starts with some contemporary sounding twisty beat displacement, and ‘From The Shadows’ is an exploration of mysterious sonic ambience. However, ‘To The Light’ is more truly representative of the band’s MO - upbeat funky 4/4 from the drums, pumping vintage keys, sinuous Earth Wind and Fire style horn lines, and flamboyant solos from guitar and moog all contribute to a general air of opulent uplift, perfect for accompanying a top-down burn along a California blacktop.

Featured guests Mathod, Cross and the ebullient Charlotte de Graaf all get on board to maintain the upbeat vibe.
