Southern Blues devotees will recognise the title of the Blind Willie Johnson masterpiece, and if that whets the appetite then a veritable feast awaits as the programme features reprises of the songs of others from that musically fertile corner of America – Skip James, John Hurt, Charley Patton and Robert Johnson to name but some. Saxophonist Preminger, who has built a head of steam through consistently good work over the past few years, adopts a wise and worldly approach to the material, often arranging the pieces at suitably languorous slow tempos over which the melodies are embellished by rich counterpoint from the twin horn front-line, of which Jason Palmer's trumpet is a powerful component. The absence of piano simply enhances the airy, unfiltered quality of the arrangements, and brings more light to the beauty of the themes, the net result being a hearty nod to all things Ornetteian, or a reminder of that icon's deep roots in the blues. As for Preminger's performance as leader, it is marked by a requisite soulfulness for the subject matter, and his languid, uncluttered phrasing and sensual tone are effective. An enjoyable affirmation of a chapter of musical history that, certainly revisited this way, feels anything but passé.
