Kicking off with a suitably greasy ‘Billericay Dickie’, Faith & Grace is a trawl through Watt-Roy’s favourite influences; indeed a good place to start is ‘Me, My Bass and I’ which has Watt-Roy recounting how his family rocked up from India, how he met Dury, fell under the thrall of Pastorius and discovered funk and Coltrane. Jaco’s voice is most obvious on a spanking ‘John & Mary’, with Atzmon and Sirkis soaring over Watt-Roy’s ever solid bass. ‘Wachu Wa’ likewise oozes Zawinul-esque vibes. Atzmon’s production is ingenious and affectionate, weaving Watt-Roy’s signature bass lines into various guises: ‘Save It’ has a delicious Gillespie vocal honey-dripped over that ‘Rhythm Stick’ riff, while ‘Norman! Norman!’ mashes up the Blockheads, the Clash and the irresistible ‘Relax’ riff. It’s rounded out with a lush ‘My Foolish Heart’. Fun, foolish, wise and raucous, Faith & Grace is further proof, if proof were needed, that there ain’t ’alf some clever bastards out there. They just need to record more.
