For those who only know Murphy from the big-souled sweep of her orchestra (watch out for the EP coming soon!), or for her arrangements of Amy Winehouse material for the not long finished NYJO tour, you are in for a treat.
It's kind of fitting that Moonrise is an EP, because it's a microcosmic world compared to other Murphy projects. But like an Elizabethan miniature or a Faberge egg, Moonrise may be small but it's rich in detail.
Favouring clarinet over the sax Murphy studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire, the five songs drift dream like (but not aimlessly) through the curious world where we are half awake, half asleep. It's a state of consciousness Brigitte Beraha sometimes explores, and indeed Murphy's long time collaborator Wilkins has something of Beraha's other worldliness. Chalk likewise stays suggestive rather than somnambulant as the trio weave their web. Perhaps only a peek through the window at Murphy's talents, but one that leads you to wish for more.
