The Cuban pianist Omar Sosa is a habitual collaborator, lending his inventive and spiritual playing to projects featuring the likes of Swiss-Cuban violinist Yilian Canazares, Italian trumpet and flugelhorn player Paolo Fresu and composer/arranger/cellist Jacques Morellenbaum. Here he teams up with the UK-based Senegalese kora player and singer Seckou Keita, no mean collaborator himself, on an album that explores the two musicians' jazz and latin leanings and celebrates their shared African roots. Buoyed by the polyrhythms of Afro-Venezuelan percussionist Gustavo Oyalles and the leftfield instrumentation of like-minds including Mieko Miyazaki on the Japanese stringed koto and E'Joung-Ju on the Korean zither, Sosa and Keita deliver a work that variously ebbs, flows and sparkles -particularly on longer improvisatory tracks ‘In the Forest’ and ‘Black Dream’. Keita's 22-string harp-lute takes an almost playful delight in interacting with Sosa's rhapsodic, often melodic musings; there is light and space here, too, and a timelessness that's liberating.
