You will, perhaps, not be surprised to learn that the Paier Valcic Quartet's Cinema Scenes has what might be termed a widescreen vision. The music has a densely visual quality: press play, close your eyes, and the accordion/bandoneon of Klaus Paier and cello of Asja Valcic are apt to begin conjuring streams of images rich in emotional colour and narrative suggestion. Underpinned by the rhythm work of Stefan Gfrerrer and Roman Werni, Paier's fluidly propulsive musicianship has splendid élan (‘Exciting Moment’, which is in no way ironically titled, gives nice evidence of this), while Valcic's cello provides ruminative resistance to any saccharine tendencies: check out ‘Hesitation’, or ‘Silence’ from the four-part ‘Cinema Scenes’ suite. Most of the tunes are original, but fittingly the quartet take on ‘Griet's Theme' from the film, Girl With A Pearl Earring, providing it with a near-tumultuous climax, and the rather less full-on ‘Doe Eyes’, from The Bridges of Madison County, co-written by Clint Eastwood.
