Dig out those saddle shoes, you’re going dancing. It all started with a jam, like the best music always does, with these three vets of the jazz, soul and R&B scenes getting down in the Colemine studios. Scone’s been the Hammond voice with the likes of Lou Donaldson, while Carman has more of a blues background, all complemented by Jimmy James’ clean as a cold shot guitar.

The result is raw, straight ahead, drenched in a Blue Note/Prestigey vibe but lit up with grooves ransacked from the usual suspects: Grant Green, The Meters, the MGs, James Brown. But it’s all very much their sound. With the freshness that comes but once when artists first meet and write together, In Green We Dream is indeed a jazz-soul-funk dream come true. James is effects free, all feel and rhythm, and is superb on the groove of ‘Parlor Strut’.

But then we’re all aboard for a sweet waltzer, ‘Sugar Maple’. ‘The Ripper’ is just that with James again the space cowboy. A slave to vinyl, In Green We Dream is annoyingly short at 34 minutes given to 11 cuts; but less leaves you wanting more. Now, where are those Oxfords…?
