There are only two musicians on Psychic Armour but, in the very best sense, they make quite a racket. Chris Corsano, an American drummer known for his work with Björk as well as with Paul Flaherty, C Spencer Yeh and Evan Parker, is a wayward Catherine wheel of a drummer. I saw him live a decade or so ago, when he was promoting his solo album The Young Cricketer, and he was pyrotechnic. Paul G Smyth, perhaps Ireland's leading free improv pianist, has also worked with Evan Parker, as well as with Derek Bailey, Peter Brötzmann and Wadada Leo Smith. Psychic Armour, released on the Weekertoft label that Smyth founded with the guitarist John Russell, comprises only three pieces but they are all expansive: the title-track clocks in at over half an hour. It's the kind of thing that works better if you're there in the room, but even on record it's combustible.
