In contrast to the cool lyrical approach of Serge Chaloff, Gerry Mulligan and Lars Gullin, Detroit gigster Pepper Adams was a nononsense gruff-tone hard bopper who had caught the ear of many including Donald Byrd (with whom he once co-led a feisty quintet), and the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band but most notably Charles Mingus. Here, on Thad Jones' ‘Zec’ Pepper shows his mettle blowing with all the agility of a booting quick-draw tenor sax player, while continually pushing himself to the very limit, but by way of contrast he eases off the gas for standards ‘Unforgettable’, ‘My One and Only Love’ and ‘Alone Together’. To some ears prolonged exposure to Pepper's rasp may irritate but this is offset by the crisp, clean-cut trumpets of Stu Williamson and Kentonite Lee Katzman cushioned by the very creative piano work of Carl Perkins and Jimmy Rowles. As Yoda suggests, like this you might!
