Here's the Danish-owned SteepleChase label dipping into the current New York swing scene rather than pursuing its more usual hard-bop beat. The Anderson twins have been gaining attention among the neo-swingers recently so what better way to judge their prowess than to present them alongside the always on-form Peplowski and D'Rivera? Imagine a feast of fast-moving swing clarinet, each Anderson with a drier tone that BG or Artie but with their sort of facility working over a top-rate hard-bop rhythm section, Washington breaking up the beat and Wong walking masterfully, Hammer at his incisive, boppish best. There's plenty of Ellington here, some pleasing standards (viz ‘When You Wish Upon A Star’) and a clary bop-fest on ‘Groovin’ High’ and ‘Night in Tunisia’, this latter pair given quite a going-over. ‘How About You’ kicks off with that attractive multi-clarinet ensemble sound, Washington kicking hard and Hammer playing an eloquent, nudging sort of solo. The gig was live and it clearly went down well. Hard to take sides and say who comes out best. They're all top men, the Andersons far from overshadowed by their illustrious partners. It's worth remembering that clarinet duos, trios and, indeed, quartets have always had a place in jazz history, so what you have here is a contemporary take on an old tradition. Nice arrangements throughout and great to hear Hammer at length, too. Solo sequences are all identified.
