Following the dissolution of their trio with pianist Fred Van Hove, reeds-man Peter Brötzmann and percussionist Han Bennink continued working together while pushing further away from jazz. Their second duo album, 1977's Schwarzwaldfahrt, was the apogee of this exploratory urge. To record it, the intrepid pair set off in a car with a portable tape recorder and cameras, and spent a week in the heart of the Black Forest. With no drums and just a few horns between them, they created sounds using the forest itself – playing logs like a giant xylophone, splashing water, swishing branches through the air. In return, the environment becomes a palpable presence, with the twittering of birds, gusts of wind and a distant aeroplane's drone adding a powerful sense of place. In this magical location, Brötzmann and Bennink are transformed into mischievous, inquisitive children, gurgling horns in running water and wandering among the trees, playing hide and seek with honking duck calls.
This lavish reissue comes with a 120-page book containing previously unseen photos from the trip taken by Brötzmann and Bennink, as well as a new essay by writer David Keenan. It's a fine monument to the liberating power of the imagination.
