Great arrangements, a nicely varied track list, a killer band. This debut album from London-based vocalist Peter Jones has lots to recommend it. Taken from an album Jones has known since childhood, the brace of songs from The Unforgettable Nat King Cole are especially strong: a lightly dancing ‘Nature Boy’ (with impressive flute work from Vasilis Xenopoulos), plus a swinging ‘Sweet Lorraine’. There are a couple of nods to film including ‘The Long Goodbye’ taken from the soundtrack to Robert Altman’s 1973 neo noir film of the same name, plus ‘I Beg Your Pardon’, the Tom Waits song from Francis Ford Coppola’s One From the Heart. Elsewhere, the singer dusts down the tricky ‘Along Came Betty’ (lyrics by Jon Hendricks) and ‘Footprints’. Jones wraps things up with Joey Calderazzo’s ‘Midnight Voyage’ featuring new lyrics penned by the singer himself. And an excellent job he makes of it too.
