A privilege of streaming your own material is the control it offers to re-visit releases that a label may delete. With Swings and Roundabouts, Bancroft time travels back 28 years to his recording debut as leader. And it also marks the then launch of Caber Records, twin brother Tom Bancroft’s label which was so instrumental in announcing a rich stream of musicians such as Brian Kellock and Colin Steele – who in turn created such fertile ground for the likes of pianist Fergus McCreadie to flourish in.

Swings and Roundabouts is as fresh as it originally sounded, with Pellitterri’s New York-edged drums high in the mix. From the opening ‘Jiggle’ which is at once mischievous as it is thoughtful, to the squall-some group improv of ‘Rock House’, Bancroft is rhythmically and melodically multi-voiced, whether resonating with a Sonny Rollins carnival feel on ‘Hubert and Cowboy Pete’ or straight ahead and swingin’ on the Duke’s ‘I Got it Bad’.

But like the best of trio releases, this is about the band’s ensemble playing, of the tug and to and fro of their shared calls and responses, summed up on the soulful ‘Love Gone Wrong’. Swings and Roundabouts is a pleasure whichever way round you take a ride. Available from Myriad Streams, Phil Bancroft’s streaming service.
