Beautiful Storm suggests a big band line-up, but this is actually a very intimate and unusual trio with a subtle sound of exploration. The presence of tabla immediately coaxes this album towards the globally-aware (download-only) racks, but the tenor and guitar sounds inhabit a mainline jazz spectrum. Scotsman Bancroft opens with a warmly welcoming ‘Finding Hope Part II’, but the 12 minute original (with full title) has a morose nature, although sprinkled with a gleam of hypothetical positive outcomes. There’s a natural Scotch folksiness to the phrasing, tune and tone. Stephen offers a toned-down version of a seething Afro-free guitar sound on ‘Tipping Point’, rehabilitated into a quietly intimate setting. With Singh’s tabla present, we can’t avoid discerning raga progressions, particularly on the tracks that feature sympathetic string-drones. ‘Insect Love’ twitches under the sheets, tenor and guitar intertwined, with a light dusting of distortion on the latter. The tune that gives the trio its name grows in power as its elements intensify, beginning a climactic clutch of tracks that all reach 10 minutes, certainly killing off this LP’s vinyl career. It’s available on Bancroft’s new Myriad Streams website, where the music is free, but with a suggestion of donations.
