Producer-multi-instrumentalists Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed-Muhammad continue their mission to shine a light on the largely forgotten heroes of independent jazz from the 1970s whose music has resonated with them as children of the hip-hop generation. The exercise is not at all uninteresting and the choice of trombonist Phil Ranelin and saxophonist Wendell Harrison is logical, given their place in history as co-founders of the iconic Detroit label Tribe, which produced much timeless music.

Previously featured on JID11, the brass and reed men fit seamlessly into the frame provided by their younger collaborators, stating themes and solos that are cogent and listenable, but the question is this, though: do they amount to something that is memorable?

To a great extent the talent and experience assembled here are too good not to yield palatable music, but the set does not have anything that stands out compositionally, and while pieces such as ‘Genesis’ take the glistening resonance of electric piano chords and pit them effectively against funky riffing the song doesn't reach the rhythmic boiling points its initial groove suggests. Every so often things walk the fine line between tribute and pastiche, as is the case with ‘Fire In Detroit’, which is very much in Mizell brothers mode but not marked by the same intricacy of arrangement.

The JID series has had variable quality control since its birth, and this session falls more on the cutting room floor than into the folder marked cutting edge.
