New generation trumpeter Philip Dizack's second album is a heartfelt probe into the melancholy of personal loss and rage in the face of natural disaster – his grandparents’ death was coterminous with watching the human cost of the Haitian earthquake unfold on TV. But there's redemption and rejuvenation of the human spirit too, and by the end of the final ballad, hope as well.
Dizack unpretentiously captures these raw and intense emotions with technical skill and solid writing – the only cover is a string-enhanced arrangement of Coldplay's ‘What If’. Dizack has a lovely tone, effortless fluency and an emotional range that follows Christian Scott's slurs, growls and use of dynamics. Trumpet is centre stage on most tracks – there are a couple of nice sax solos and Aaron Parks oblique, spare and slightly mournful piano fills always stand out – but there's also a real sense of collaboration and mutual support. Both rhythm sections are strong and each piece unfurls sinuously, though occasionally the three string arrangements stray into too soft a focus.
