Here's an unusual jazz pairing: nylon string guitar and grand piano, the former played by comparative newcomer Schiepek, the latter by the more seasoned and storied Lang. They apply themselves and their instruments to 11 originals, two by Schiepek, the rest by Lang. There's the suggestion of a spiritual theme – ‘Cathedral’, ‘Pilgrimage’ – and certainly a meditative quality to the whole set, and not just on the track ‘Meditation in Ten, a six-minute piece poised between sunny exhalation and gently overcast rumination. Guitar and piano blend and spar with thoughtful grace, with understated shifts in mood keeping things interesting.
The title track has the grandeur and spaciousness of a cathedral, at least in its opening statement, with subsequent developments and variations then carrying the musical story forward. ‘Gliding over Meadows’ is a charming pastoral excursion led by Lang, while drama and a sense of urgency are supplied by ‘The World Is Upside Down’ and its prelude.
