Here's more of Ben Jaffe's re-envisioning of the PHJB as an ensemble with contemporary relevance. Still rooted in the Hall's traditional performance style, even if that is hardly represented here, the band now incorporates markedly more input from the Crescent City's R&B and street band heritage. Much of this change of emphasis comes from their association with James, better known as the guitarist and producer with the rock band My Morning Jacket. This also involves a deliberate leaning away from time-honoured standard tunes and a preference for original and often wildly eclectic material contributed by band members, notably Jaffe himself, Gabriel and Maedgen. So saying, how does this all go? Well, surprisingly well once the initial expectations are set aside. Rolling drums and tuba set the rhythm for Jaffe's strident shout title piece, as Braud comes in, more Cuban than N'awlins, the band riffs finishing abruptly. Jaffe's ‘Dear Lord’ is loose and reverential, clarinet peeping through behind the uncredited vocals. Good time music, for sure. ‘Rattlin' Bones’ recalls the city's past and voodoo culture in hokum fashion before ‘I Think I Love You’ uses what we might call the Longhair beat. So, all in all, 11 tracks employing a rich gumbo of influences and ingredients, with plenty of festive moments and some accomplished playing. A far cry from days of old maybe, but why not?
